Something Beneath Blackstone Is Beginning to Stir

Blackstone is a quiet agricultural town built over the remains of an exhausted mine.

Its orchards and grain fields cover land once crossed by miners, surveyors, and families who came south in search of a future. Most residents know that the town began with the discovery of valuable ore beneath the hills. They also know that the mine eventually failed, its tunnels were sealed, and Blackstone learned to survive without it.

At least, that is the history everyone remembers.

Soon, Mother Crystal Studios will invite players to step into this town and discover what remains buried beneath it.

Introducing Echoes Beneath Blackstone

Echoes Beneath Blackstone is a system-neutral fantasy roleplaying adventure for three to five players and a Game Master. It can be played as one extended session, divided across two or more shorter sessions, or used as the beginning of a continuing campaign.

The adventure begins after Tomas Venn, a young man from one of Blackstone’s farming families, returns from the abandoned mine carrying memories that are not his own.

Some believe he was injured in the tunnels. Others fear that he disturbed something that should have remained sealed. Imperial authorities are already taking an interest, and the people of Blackstone do not agree about what should happen next.

The characters must investigate Tomas’s condition, speak with the people who know him, follow conflicting evidence, and decide whether they are willing to descend into the abandoned workings themselves.

What they uncover will confront them with a difficult question:

What should people do when the truth beneath their home is more dangerous than the history built over it?

A Mystery Shaped by Player Choice

This is not an adventure built around discovering one approved solution.

The characters may approach Blackstone’s mystery through investigation, exploration, empathy, suspicion, negotiation, or force. Their choices affect the people they meet, the evidence they uncover, and the condition in which they leave the town.

Preparation and curiosity matter. So does the way the characters treat Tomas and the strange presence connected to him.

The final decision belongs to the table.

Players may choose to protect what they find, reveal it, surrender it to Imperial control, attempt to destroy it, or pursue a course the adventure never anticipated. Each ending creates consequences that can remain with Blackstone long after the immediate danger has passed.

System-Neutral Fantasy Play

Echoes Beneath Blackstone is designed to work with a wide range of fantasy roleplaying systems.

Instead of relying on statistics from one particular ruleset, the adventure describes challenges according to their difficulty, danger, and likely consequences. The Game Master can select the skill, attribute, saving throw, or other mechanic that best represents a character’s approach in the group’s preferred game.

The adventure also includes optional guidance for groups that want a simple resolution method without adopting a complete rules system.

This approach keeps the focus on the town, its mystery, and the decisions made by the players.

An Introduction to the Resonance Cycle

Blackstone is part of the larger setting of The Resonance Cycle, but the adventure has been designed to protect the central revelations of the novels.

The locations, cultures, historical foundations, and principles of magic reflect the setting. Players will encounter a world that has forgotten much of its relationship with Aether—the living energy of creation—and learned to fear what earlier generations understood differently.

However, the adventure does not reveal the complete truth of the novels or require players to know anything about the larger saga.

It is classified as Adapted Play.

That means the setting remains recognizable, but the choices made at the table create a separate outcome. A group’s version of Blackstone belongs to that group. It does not replace the events of the novels or establish the official history of the Resonance Cycle.

Every table creates its own resonance.

More Than a Single Adventure

The upcoming release is being developed as a flexible collection rather than one oversized file.

The core package will contain everything needed to run the complete adventure, including an illustrated reading edition and a printer-friendly edition.

Additional options will support different kinds of groups:

  • A Player Companion with in-world handouts and system-neutral character sheets
  • A Game Master Expansion with additional encounters, character foundations, campaign material, trackers, and session tools
  • A Blackstone Map Pack with player and Game Master maps for print and virtual-tabletop use
  • A Complete Blackstone Collection bringing the entire line together

Customers will be able to begin with the core adventure or choose the expanded collection that best suits their table.

Built with Care

This project has grown considerably from its original outline.

The adventure has gone through proofreading, continuity review, layout testing, and multiple visual-quality passes. Tables have been rebuilt for readability. Separate illustrated and low-ink editions have been prepared. Player information has been separated from Game Master secrets, and public previews have been carefully checked to protect the mystery.

Supporting documents, maps, handouts, character sheets, release information, and storefront materials are now being prepared for publication.

There is still work to complete before the doors to Blackstone officially open, but the adventure is approaching its release-ready form.

The Road Beneath the Hills

Echoes Beneath Blackstone represents an important step for Mother Crystal Studios.

It is the first complete roleplaying release built within the Resonance Cycle setting, and it provides a foundation for future adventures, expansions, and stories. More importantly, it offers a first opportunity for players to enter this world and shape a part of it for themselves.

Further release information, previews, and availability details will be shared soon.

Until then, remember:

History does not always forget by accident.

Sometimes, it is taught to remain silent.

Worlds with history. Magic with consequences. Stories that resonate.
